Peter Savory

Peter’s practice includes a wide variety of personal injury work, and he is regularly instructed both in court and in preparation of advice and pleadings. Instructions include both Claimant and Defendant work, sometimes on CFAs, across the full range of occupiers’ liability, public liability, employers’ liability and road traffic.

RTA

Peter has gained much experience of RTA trials, appearing in court in small claims and fast track matters several times a week. His experience includes liability matters, personal injury, quantum disputes, credit hire and dishonesty allegations, as well as procedural matters and cost hearings. Adept at analysis, he has had particular success with ‘black box’ data and in LVI challenges. As a ‘career-changer’ at the Bar, Peter brings a maturity to proceedings which is valued by lay-clients at trial and in pre-trial conference. Peter is also regularly instructed in paperwork matters, including all pleadings as well as advice on liability and quantum.

Employers’ and Public Liability

Peter appears in court on small claims and fast-track matters. He is regularly instructed to provide advice, pleadings and attend trial in EL/PL claims, including classic slip/trips in the workplace and on the highway; regulatory matters such as provision of equipment, safe working methods and risk assessments, and application of the “six-pack” regulations generally. He has represented local authorities and housing bodies, and also deals with claims in an education setting.

Peter regularly appears for insurers in road traffic matters both in liability disputes and underlying procedural questions where coverage may be challenged. He has advised on points of law, pleadings and foreign coverage issues. He has also been instructed on diverse matters including whether or not an insurance policy should respond in respect of travel delays caused by drone strikes, the extent to which buildings insurance covers subsidence.

Peter has a growing clinical negligence practice and has been instructed on a range of matters, including misdiagnosis, negligent and delayed treatment. He has provided detailed pleadings, both for claimant and defendant, as well as advices on liability, quantum, offers and other procedural issues.

Peter also provides assistance concerning interim and pre-action matters, has experience in conducting conferences with medical experts and clients, and attends hearings where necessary. He prides himself on a quick turnaround of instructions.

Peter is regularly instructed for both Claimants and Defendants in credit hire matters in both small claims and in higher value fast track matters. He is well-versed in all the usual case law, as well as dealing with deficiencies in evidence and the challenges that may arise. He also has had success for Defendants in abuse of process claims and resulting cost matters. At the appellate level he has appeared in permission to appeal hearings and provided advice and written materials for the same.

Peter came to the Bar with considerable international commercial experience. In his former career he was responsible for negotiating and contracting the tours of major performing arts groups throughout Europe and Asia, dealing with multi-jurisdiction contracts in respect of fees, sponsorship, royalties, travel and hotel arrangements. Inevitably he also encountered first-hand the occasional perils of such complexity.

Within his practice at the Bar, Peter is instructed by both Claimants and Defendants and appears regularly in fast and multi track matters, as well as associated applications and cost matters. Within his travel practice he has been instructed in a wide range of matters including aviation claims, PI matters, jurisdictional arguments and pleading advice, cancellations, insurance disputes, and even losses from drone incursions.

He has a busy paperwork practice and can turnaround paperwork at short notice.

Peter has undertaken a wide variety of hearings and prepared pleadings in general common law matters. Recent successful matters include defending a building company against allegations of poor workmanship; a claim by an international printing company against a hotel chain; and a claim for injunctive relief in a property dispute, and enforcement of a foreign judgment in England. His own commercial background enables him to readily assess contracts and similar papers.

Peter was instructed as part of the London Fire Brigade junior counsel team taking part in the Grenfell Tower fire public enquiry.

Peter is qualified to accept instruction directly from members of the public under the Public Access Scheme.

Peter is experienced at dealing with the various costs regimes encountered at trial, including the application of Part 36 and QOCS. He also appears in hearings dealing exclusively with costs, applications concerning the same, and has advised on cost budgets for multi-track trials.

Peter brings wide commercial experience to the Bar. He is adept at understanding contracts and the underlying issues. He has been instructed in commercial breach of contract matters, debt recovery, enforcement of foreign judgments, and directors’ issues. He has also been asked to advise on interpretation of contracts.
